How to Evaluate 5-Axis CNC Shops

A buyer's checklist for evaluating 5-axis CNC shops: the questions that reveal real capability, the red flags that predict scrap, and how to structure a first order that de-risks the relationship.

Mazak VARIAXIS I-600 5-axis machining centre on the Zhuohang shop floor in Dongguan.

1. The questions that reveal real capability

2. Red flags

Watch forWhat it predicts
"High precision" with no number behind itMarketing, not measurement
No inspection report offeredYou find defects in your own plant
Reluctance to discuss datumsMisinterpretation risk on GD&T
Pressure to skip a pilotThey want volume before proving capability
Can't name the process for your partThey may be brokering, not making

3. Structure the first order to de-risk

  1. Send a complete package: STEP/IGES model + toleranced 2D drawing with datums, material, finish, inspection needs.
  2. Request a first-article or CMM report tied to your datums on the pilot.
  3. Agree the lead time and communication cadence before parts are cut.
  4. Scale only after the pilot is right.
We run 100+ CNC machines (Mazak, Brother, TSUGAMI, Sodick) and hold ±0.003 mm milled/turned and ±0.002 mm ground/wire-cut routinely, with Ppk ≥1.67 at launch and Cpk ≥1.33 in production on critical features. Certifications: ISO 9001:2015, IATF 16949:2016 (excluding 8.3 design), ISO 14001:2015 — issued to Dongguan Zhuohang Ltd.

4. What "good" looks like in practice

A good 5-axis shop returns a quote that references your actual tolerances, asks a clarifying question instead of guessing, and quotes the simplest process that meets the spec. That behavior on a $200 pilot is the strongest predictor of a smooth $20,000 production run.
