1. What a 6-axis laser system does
A "6-axis" laser cutting machine adds rotary and tilting axes to the basic X/Y/Z beam path, so the laser can reach angled and contoured surfaces — trimming formed sheet, cutting along a tube's profile, or bevelling an edge — in fewer setups than a flat-bed 3-axis system. The value is the same as in machining: cut a complex path without re-clamping.
2. Where laser cutting wins
- Thin sheet and plate profiles — speed and edge quality are hard to beat.
- Tube and section cutting — rotary axes follow the profile without fixtures per face.
- Trimming formed parts — cutting a 3D-shaped shell after forming.
- Non-contact cutting — no tool pressure, so thin or delicate stock won't distort.
3. Where CNC machining is the better call
| If your part needs… | Choose |
|---|---|
| Milled pockets, bores, threads, 3D contours from solid stock | 5-axis CNC machining center |
| Tight volumetric or positional tolerances between faces | 5-axis CNC machining center |
| Thick-wall features, bosses, ribs | 5-axis CNC machining center |
| A 2D/2.5D profile in thin sheet | Laser cutting |
The honest takeaway: laser cutting does not replace milling. It complements it. Many real parts are laser-cut to profile, then CNC-machined for the features that cutting can't produce.
4. Specifying a laser-cut part
- Material and thickness decide cut speed, edge quality, and heat-affected zone.
- Edge requirements — deburr, no dross, or a specific finish — change post-processing.
- Tolerances that matter — laser holds profile well, but not the volumetric accuracy of milling.
- Secondary ops — if the part also needs bores or threads, plan for a machining step.
5. A practical buying check
- List every feature the part needs — separate "cut profile" from "machined feature."
- Send the model and note which features are functional vs. cosmetic.
- Ask the supplier which process defines the critical dimensions, and why.
- Get the quote tied to that process, not a generic "we can do it."
